Who They Are:
- The Apatani (also known as Tanw, Apa Tani, or Apa) are an indigenous tribal community of Arunachal Pradesh.
- Renowned for their distinct cultural identity, ecological wisdom, and sustainable agricultural practices.
- They primarily inhabit the Ziro Valley in Lower Subansiri district—a scenic, bowl-shaped valley in the eastern Himalayas.
Facial Tattoo Tradition:
Historical Roots:
- Tattoos and nose plugs were introduced as a protective measure against raids and abductions by rival tribes.
- Over time, the practice transformed into a marker of identity and cultural pride, especially for women.
Reasons for the Practice:
- Protection from Abduction: Tattoos and wooden nose plugs made women less attractive to outsiders.
- Identity & Dignity: Became symbols of honour and belonging to the Apatani community.
- Cultural Beauty Standard: Within the tribe, tattoos were regarded as markers of beauty and respect.
Custom & Process:
- Age of Tattooing: Typically performed when girls were around 10 years old.
- Design (Tippei):
- One vertical line from the forehead down to the nose tip.
- Five vertical lines tattooed on the chin.
- Nose Plugs (Yaping Hullo): Large wooden plugs inserted into both nostrils, cleaned to prevent infection.
- Community Status: Women with tattoos and plugs were honoured as proud custodians of tradition and dignity.
Decline of the Tradition:
- In the early 1970s, the government banned the practice, citing social stigma and barriers to women’s employment in modern society.
- As a result, the tradition has faded, and today only elderly Apatani women still bear the tattoos and nose plugs—making them the last living carriers of this cultural heritage.
