Samudra Pradakshina Expedition
In News:
- The Defence Ministry virtually flagged off Samudra Pradakshina — a historic tri-service all-women circumnavigation sailing expedition.
About the Initiative:
- First-of-its-kind mission highlighting Nari Shakti, jointness of the Armed Forces, the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, and India’s maritime outreach.
- A team of 10 women officers from the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force will undertake the voyage onboard the indigenously-built Indian Army Sailing Vessel (IASV) Triveni.
- Duration: Nine months (Sept 2025 – May 2026).
Route & Milestones:
- Total distance: ~26,000 nautical miles.
- Route: Easterly circumnavigation of the globe.
- Key geographical highlights: Crossing the Equator twice and rounding the three great Capes — Cape Leeuwin, Cape Horn, and Cape of Good Hope.

Scientific & Strategic Dimensions:
- Collaboration with the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO).
- Research focus: Study of microplastics, documentation of marine biodiversity, and awareness on ocean health.
- Reinforces India’s commitment to Blue Economy, marine research, and sustainable oceans.
- Return: Expedition scheduled to conclude in Mumbai, May 2026.
