- India’s fight against malaria has received a significant boost with the development of AdFalciVax, the country’s first indigenous multi-stage malaria recombinant vaccine.
- In a key move, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has granted non-exclusive rights to five pharmaceutical companies to produce it.
About AdFalciVax
- Developed by the Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC), which operates under the ICMR, AdFalciVax is designed to combat Plasmodium falciparum, the deadliest and most difficult-to-control malaria parasite.
- This innovative vaccine works by targeting the parasite before it can enter the bloodstream, effectively stopping the infection at its transmission stage and reducing its spread within the community.
- The vaccine’s core technology utilizes Lactococcus lactis, a food-grade bacterial host that has been genetically engineered to safely deliver the vaccine.
- By granting production rights to multiple companies, the ICMR aims to ensure widespread access to this crucial medical advancement.
