- The Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) government has launched a new initiative to secure Geographical Indication (GI) tag registrations for cultural artifacts belonging to all 26 of its communities. This special drive builds upon the success of 21 indigenous Bodo items that have already received GI tags.
Understanding Geographical Indication (GI)
- A GI is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. This can apply to a wide range of goods, including agricultural products, handicrafts, and food items.
- In India, the legal framework for GIs is governed by the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration & Protection) Act, 1999. The registration is administered by the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks and is valid for a period of 10 years, which can be renewed.
Significance for the BTR
- Securing GI tags for these artifacts is a crucial step for the BTR for several reasons:
- Protects Indigenous Identity: It legally safeguards the unique cultural heritage of the region’s diverse communities.
- Boosts Local Economy: The tag enhances the market value of local handicrafts and agro-products, creating new economic opportunities for artisans and farmers.
- Strengthens Cultural Branding: It serves as a powerful tool to promote the cultural identity and “soft power” of Assam’s tribal communities on a national and global scale.
