Syllabus:Governance

Context:
- The Chhattisgarh government has introduced Yoga and Sudarshan Kriya across all district jails as part of prison reforms, seeking to rehabilitate inmates by fostering mental peace, self-discipline, and positive thinking.
About the Initiative:
- Yoga: An ancient Indian discipline integrating physical postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), and meditation for holistic well-being.
- Sudarshan Kriya: A structured rhythmic breathing practice developed by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar (Art of Living Foundation), aimed at harmonizing body, mind, and emotions.
- Implemented under the “Prison Course” in collaboration with the Art of Living Foundation.
Significance:
- Shift from Punitive to Reformative Justice: Reorients prisons as spaces for healing and reintegration rather than mere punishment.
- Psychological Rehabilitation: Helps inmates cope with past trauma, violence, and stress.
- Cultivation of Positive Behaviour: Builds self-control, emotional balance, and hope—critical for post-release reintegration.
- Administrative Benefits: Reduces incidents of indiscipline, easing the burden on prison authorities.
- Symbolic Impact: Sends a message of peace and rehabilitation, especially in conflict-affected regions.
