WHO Reports on Global Mental Health Crisis

Syllabus:Science Global Mental Health Crisis: Insights from WHO 2024 Reports The World Health Organization (WHO) released updated data in 2024 highlighting a worsening global mental health crisis. Suicide remains a leading cause of death worldwide, and mental health disorders are increasing at a faster pace than population growth. The reports, ‘World Mental Health Today’ and ‘Mental Health Atlas 2024’, provide post-COVID-19 insights into prevalence, trends, and healthcare challenges.   Suicide Statistics and Trends In 2021, approximately 727,000 people died by suicide globally. On average, one suicide death occurs for every 20 attempts. Suicide is the leading cause of death among young people across all countries. Despite global efforts, the UN SDG target of reducing suicide rates by one-third by 2030 is unlikely to be met; current projections indicate only a 12% reduction by 2030.     Prevalence of Mental Health Disorders Over 1 billion people worldwide live with mental health disorders. Anxiety and depressive disorders account for over two-thirds of all mental health conditions. Between 2011 and 2021, age-standardised prevalence rose to 13.6%, an increase of 0.9% over a decade. Young adults (20–29 years) show the largest increase in prevalence. Gender differences: Males more commonly experience ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, and intellectual disabilities. Females are more prone to anxiety, depression, and eating disorders.   Age and Gender Patterns Anxiety disorders typically begin before age 10. Depressive disorders are uncommon in childhood but increase after age 40, peaking between 50 and 69 years. Distinct gender patterns indicate differing prevalence and onset ages for various mental health conditions.   Challenges in Mental Health Care Delivery Many countries, including India, face critical gaps in mental health care. Insufficient psychiatric beds exist outside specialised institutions. Care models remain largely custodial, requiring a shift to therapeutic and community-based approaches. Psychiatric hospitals often face poor conditions and stigma. Funding for mental health services is inadequate. There is a shortage of trained professionals—psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric nurses, and social workers—especially in rural areas.   Barriers to Access and Continuity of Care Geographic and economic factors limit access to care. High costs of treatment and travel prevent many patients from seeking care. Continuity of care and availability of medicines is frequently disrupted. Severe mental illnesses often lead to loss of income, financial hardship, and social exclusion.   Strategies for Improvement Strengthening community-based mental health services and shifting away from custodial care. Increasing funding and resource allocation for mental health infrastructure. Expanding training programs to increase the number of mental health professionals. Improving accessibility in rural and remote areas, including telemedicine solutions. Promoting early intervention and awareness campaigns to reduce stigma. Ensuring continuity of care, reliable supply of medicines, and integration with primary healthcare. Vrindavani Vastra Textile

Syllabus:Geography The 16th-century Vrindavani Vastra, a priceless silk textile from Assam, is scheduled to be exhibited in the state in 2027. The British Museum, London, has agreed to loan the textile for 18 months, marking a historic occasion as Assam prepares to showcase this artifact on Indian soil for the first time.   Historical Significance The Vrindavani Vastra was woven under the guidance of saint-reformer Srimanta Sankardeva in 16th-century Assam. It depicts scenes from the life of Lord Krishna and incorporates texts from Sankardeva’s devotional play, Kaliyadamana. Woven using the intricate lampas technique, the textile requires two weavers working simultaneously. The cloth represents a rare example of Assam’s rich cultural and religious heritage from the 16th century.   Journey to the British Museum Fragments of the Vrindavani Vastra were taken to Tibet during the 17th or 18th century. British explorers acquired pieces in the 19th and 20th centuries. The India Museum later obtained these fragments and transferred them to the British Museum. Approximately 20 fragments survive, with the British Museum holding a stitched cloth of 12 silk strips measuring over 9 metres in length.   Conditions for Loan and Exhibition Assam must construct a museum meeting strict environmental and security standards to ensure the textile’s preservation. The JSW Group has been allotted land in Guwahati to build the museum under its corporate social responsibility (CSR) A sovereign guarantee from the President of India is required to ensure the textile’s safe return within the loan period.   Artistic Features The textile’s 12 silk strips feature: Scenes from Krishna’s life Depictions of Vishnu’s avataras Captions and devotional verses The top section incorporates Chinese damask and brocade with dragon motifs, likely later additions. Metal rings are attached for suspension. The lampas weaving technique involves two sets of warps and wefts and requires two weavers working in tandem, highlighting the textile’s complexity and craftsmanship. Current Affairs 8 September 2025 – Tone Academy

Boston Brahmins Syllabus:Polity Understanding “Brahmins”: Contrasting Indian and American Contexts Recent debates over the term “Brahmins” have highlighted confusion stemming from its different meanings in India and the United States. In India, Brahmins traditionally refer to a priestly caste with religious authority, whereas in the US, the term is metaphorical, describing a socially elite and culturally influential class. The issue gained attention recently when a US political figure linked Indian Brahmins to profiteering, drawing criticism for conflating caste identity with economic behavior. This has renewed interest in the historical context of the Boston Brahmins, a notable American elite group.   Origin of Boston Brahmins The Boston Brahmins were an affluent, well-educated Protestant elite based in Boston during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The term was coined by Oliver Wendell Holmes in 1861 to describe the city’s upper-class families. Most Boston Brahmins descended from English colonists and solidified their social dominance through trade, education, and strategic marriages. Their influence was rooted in wealth, cultural refinement, and inherited social networks.     Social and Cultural Characteristics Boston Brahmins emulated the lifestyle of English aristocrats, emphasizing refinement, education, and cultural pursuits. They played a central role in founding Harvard University and elite preparatory schools such as Choate and Phillips Exeter. Their social identity included a distinct accent, conservative fashion, and carefully maintained etiquette. Marriages were typically arranged within their community, preserving social exclusivity and reinforcing a tight-knit elite circle. Their cultural and social practices ensured that the Boston Brahmins remained a cohesive and influential social class over generations.     Political and Social Influence The Boston Brahmins wielded considerable influence in Boston’s civic and political life. They favored social closure, resisting large-scale immigration and limiting opportunities for political or economic advancement to outsiders. While many supported abolitionism, they were often resistant to including African Americans, Irish Catholics, and other minority groups within their social and professional networks.   Notable Members and Legacy Prominent figures among the Boston Brahmins included US Presidents John Adams, John Quincy Adams, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, as well as the poet T.S. Eliot. Their legacy spans contributions to education, politics, literature, and culture. However, their exclusivity and resistance to immigrants, especially Irish Catholics, left a lasting imprint on Boston’s social structure and divisions.   Comparison with Indian Brahmins Unlike Boston Brahmins, Indian Brahmins are traditionally a priestly caste with social and religious authority but not inherently associated with wealth or commerce. In contrast, the Boston Brahmins combined cultural elite status with significant economic power. The use of “Brahmin” in the US is metaphorical, signifying social dominance rather than a hereditary caste.   Contemporary Relevance The history of the Boston Brahmins illustrates how elite groups maintain power through cultural capital, education, and social networks. Understanding these dynamics offers insight into class, ethnicity, and power in American society. Moreover, conflating such terms across cultures can perpetuate misunderstandings and political controversies, underscoring the importance of cultural sensitivity in discourse. Consider the following statements about the Boston Brahmins: They supported abolitionism but were socially exclusive. Their social dominance was based on hereditary caste identity. They influenced the foundation of elite educational institutions. Which of the statements is/are correct?A) 1 and 2 onlyB) 1 and 3 onlyC) 2 and 3 onlyD) 1, 2, and 3 Correct Answer: BExplanation: Statement 1 is correct—they supported abolitionism but maintained social exclusivity. Statement 2 is incorrect—they were not hereditary by caste but elite by wealth and culture. Statement 3 is correct—they founded Harvard and elite preparatory schools. APEDA Launches BHARATI To Boost Agri-Food Exports Syllabus:Geography   In 2025, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) launched BHARATI, a flagship initiative aimed at fostering innovation, supporting startups, and boosting India’s agri-food exports.
